The event explored the practicalities and implications of projects which are changing the balance of power, ownership and control in the economy and society. Participants shared practical insights and challenges, as well as suggesting opportunities for new models as well as collaborative ways forward.
Several short presentations inspired discussion and further ideas, including inputs from Chris Bruce, Green Valleys, on Project Skyline – community land stewardship in Wales; Sally Lowndes, from the Onion Collective, outlining a joint venture with a biotech company to create the first jointly owned bio-manufacturing company fusing social justice and environmental improvement; Colin Baines, from Friends Provident Foundation, describing an innovative governance model to ensure mission and democratic engagement in mainstream financial markets; and Mathew Lawrence, from Common Wealth, setting out challenges and opportunities to embed these approaches as part of normal experience and the ‘fabric of everyday life’.
